OM

Did you always dream of being an Artist and how did your journey as an Artist begin?

SM

"I dreamt of being an Artist from the age of 14. I remember touring galleries with my art class in fourth form at Wellington Girls College. That day made a big impact on me, it was so inspiring to see the Artist's work on the walls. I could tell that "it" was something special in the way their work made me feel and I could tell they loved what they were doing".

Where is your studio located and what style would you say best describes your Art?

SM

"The style of my still life oil painting is painterly and vivid. My studio dream was realised last year when we moved to our new home, located in the quiet semi-rural suburb of Blind Bight which is an hour south of Melbourne. My studio is a large fitted out shed  which was previously used as a Gym so I have a toilet, lots of space and a giant wall that rolls away for great natural light. I have these wonderful shelves that are home to my vessel and textile collection so instant inspiration. I have had daylight lights installed which is great for night painting. The best part is that I can see straight into the kitchen/lounge area of the house so I can feel very connected to my family".

What does a day look like in the life of Sam Michelle?

SM

"My Hubby, two boys and I have breakfast. The boys then head off to school and drop me off for my morning run and I run home. I head into my studio at about 9am and the first thing I do (Superstitiously) is to turn on my "creative" lamp, I like to think it helps to switch on additional creativity for the day. I start with some reading, drawing and depending on what stage I am at with a collection, I turn on a podcast, playlist or I put a song on repeat and tune out. I especially like that every day is different. Last week I was down at Warneet Pier drawing boats, today I was planning an itinerary for a few days in the South Island of New Zealand to work on my next collection".

OM

What inspires you creatively?

SM

"The main things that inspire my paintings are Flora, textiles and vessels. Recently I have been enjoying the freedom of sketching and designing my own vases. I love the freedom that it can be anything, any colour, any size and shape and I can fit it within my composition".

SM

"Peonies, because they have so much character. I love their roundness and every stage from bud to opening. Hydrangeas, as they remind me of my homeland New Zealand. For equal third, Magnolias, Flannel Flowers, Dahlias, Echinacea, Water Lilies and Japanese Anemone, all for their character".

" Joining Gallerysmith is the highlight of my career to date. For me Gallerysmith is a mix of support, mentor and coach encouraging my artistic growth".

What does the future look like for Sam Michelle?

SM

"If my future looks like it does right now, I would be one happy artist. Personally, I have a wonderful family, friends and my health. My husband and I are both self - employed and are grateful for the flexibility it provides us with our young family. Professionally I am blessed with wonderful followers of my work and I have the best supportive gallery, Gallerysmith".
